King Ice

Logo design for an L.A.-based urban jewelry brand.

King Ice 2012

Overview

King Ice is a Los Angeles-based company designing urban jewelry and bling - rings, pendants, chains, bracelets - rooted in hip-hop and street culture. Since the original logo was designed, the company has grown substantially: its catalog now spans multiple licensed collections built around pop culture and gaming franchises, alongside standalone sub-brands. One of those, Jungl Julz - a collaboration with Snoop Dogg - I also worked on as a separate identity project.

Strategy

The brief called for a mark with urban grit - something that would belong on a jewelry box, a mixtape cover, or a hoodie with equal ease. The lettermark uses heavy, broken strokes and rough edges to evoke hand-lettering, graffiti, and the texture of the street culture the brand grew out of. The shape is strong enough to embroider, emboss, cast in metal, or slap onto packaging without losing its attitude.
